Only parrots held by private aviculturists will be
listed and for simplicity no hyphens have been used in the common names.
Asiatic parrots:
Many species of Asiatic parrots are kept and bred in Australia: Alexandrine, Derbyan, Malabar, Moustached, Plum
headed, Ringnecked, Blossom headed Parrot and Slaty headed parrots.
Exceptionally hardy birds. A steel
framed aviary with a fully
covered roof is preferable. They are usually heavy chewers on timbers & wire
mesh. Single pair per aviary is recommended.
Can be noisy and may annoy neighbours.
Diet = 2 parts grey sunflower, 1 part oats, 1 part
small seed mix comprising 50% canary seed & 50% Panicum and millet.
Corn on the cob, some fruits and some vegetables.
Breeds August onwards. Single brooded
(one clutch per year).
3 - 4 eggs per clutch. Incubation about 28 days. Larger Asiatics 4 - 5 eggs, incubation
about 21 days for smaller Asiatics. Fledge 7 - 8 weeks. Log
or nest box is usually placed in a vertical position but may be on any
angle up to 45degrees. The log or nest-box can be left in the
aviary all year round and hens may use it as a
roosting place. Sexed about 2.5 - 3 years.
Conures: Refer
to "Conures" web page.
Jandaya, Nanday, and Sun are the most
commonly held. Sexually monomorphic i.e. difficult to determine
sexes. Can be very noisy especially when they get excited.
May upset neighbours with their noise. Demand a lot of
attention from their owners. Destructive to timber.
Attractive birds with the Sun Conure probably the best coloured of the
most popular conures. Aggressive birds requiring one pair per
aviary and needing double wiring between aviary walls. Diet is
fairly basic - seed mix, seeding grasses and some fruit and vegetables
such as apple and corn on the cob.
Accept logs or nest boxes. Lay 3 -
4 eggs per clutch. Hen incubates for about 24 - 26 days.
Fledge in about 7 - 8 weeks.
The United States of America had
only one native parrot, the Carolina Parakeet, Conuropsis
carolinensis. Alas this bird is now extinct.
Australia and South America have been
blessed with a wealth of parrots, Africa and Asia have a few, United
States of America now has none, and the northern hemisphere very few.
